Day 3️⃣: Ruby, GaryV, and Life in Between

If you haven’t been following this series, you can read all articles about my career break here. Read about yesterday here.

Some days kick off with code, others with coffee. Today started with both and a fresh Ruby challenge!

Leetcode experiments with Ruby

Started my day putting Ruby to the test on Leetcode with whatever little Ruby I learned in the past couple of days. Below are some of the personal observations compared to Python:

  • Too few lines to write compared to Python
  • No wrestling with missed colons or indentation matching
  • Single-line / short-hand conditionals extremely handy
  • While Ruby runs a tad slower than Python, I didn’t find the difference worrying enough to outweigh how concise it lets me code
  • When code execution time is important, avoiding String or Array reallocation can help

At this point, Ruby makes a strong case for my future scripting needs.

Continuing with learning Ruby

The deep dive continued with Kevin Skoglund’s Complete Guide to Ruby on LinkedIn Learning. Didn’t venture into OOP yet, but got my hands dirty with Enumerables, code blocks, and crafting custom methods. Yet again, Ruby’s design just feels…intentionally thoughtful.

Personal Branding QnA with Gary Vee

I am a Gary Vee fan and spent an hour listening to Gary Vee in a LinkedIn Premium QnA session where he answered questions from some of the listeners and shared his learnings about building Personal brand in any platform. As usual it was a great content and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. He also reminded me I need to update my 8 years old LinkedIn display pic 😉

He’s a must-listen for anyone thinking about their online presence or building their own personal brand.

What am I doing personally?

Life, on the side, is pleasant: more walks, more time with my dogs, reading, and a fresh round of meal prep to keep decisions light for the week. Made some progress with the book “The Hard Thing about Hard Things” from Ben Horowitz start of the day. Ending the day with “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” (quarter way through and enjoying the slow reveal of its secrets).

Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow! 🙌
