For any professional, there are hard skills that matter the most when they start working. Without these hard skills, they cannot progress at all in the initial years. But unless you are in the top 1%, there is only limited success you can achieve just by working on these hard skills. After that, your wisdom, articulation, drive, and influence will matter the most. Together, they form what we call “soft skills.”
For many, it is difficult to accept initially that a lack of soft skills can become a hindrance to growth. People who realize this early and work on developing these skills grow faster than others practicing denial.
AI is bound to reduce a lot of learnt or redundant hard skill-related work. Over time, it will only improve at doing things that can be elaborated as part of a checklist. This shift will enable people to work a step higher than they are used to.
What does this mean for your career? Expect to work at a level higher than you’re accustomed to—expectations will go through a drastic change as professionals using AI will far exceed the output of their peers who refuse to adapt and spend time doing things manually that can be automated.
Are there any skills which are AI-proof?
Yes, there are—and they have always been around and have always been the most valuable. AI will now make the difference more evident. So what are these skills? We have already talked about them before here: Key Skills for Professional Success 🥷
- Reliability or Agency — Someone can depend on you and doesn’t have to worry once you commit to owning an outcome.
- Collaboration — Being able to articulate your ideas well. Helping others grow and succeed around you. Getting to know people beyond their professional titles.
- Adaptability — Learning & unlearning. Practicing being a lifelong learner. Maintaining everlasting curiosity.
- Grit — Passion & perseverance. The ability to keep going when the going gets tough.
- Longevity — Knowing how to pace yourself. Understanding when to sprint and when to take a break or go slow.
These five skills will separate those who thrive from those who merely survive in the AI era. As AI handles more of our routine tasks, our uniquely human capabilities become our greatest asset. The professionals who excel won’t fight against AI but will embrace it while sharpening these skills.
