I recently completed The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel where he talks about the rich man in the car paradox. It intrigued me how straightforward it is but not a common understanding. Below is the excerpt from the book –
“When you see someone driving a nice car, you rarely think, “Wow, the guy driving that car is cool.”
Instead, you think, “Wow, if I had the car people would think I’m cool.”
The paradox of wealth is that people tend to want it to signal to others that they should be liked and admired. But in reality, those other people bypass admiring you, not because they don’t think wealth is admirable, but because they use your wealth solely as a benchmark for their own desire to be liked and admired.
The point isn’t to abandon the pursuit of wealth, of course. Or even fancy cars – I like both. It’s recognizing that people generally aspire to be respected by others, and humility, graciousness, intelligence, and empathy tend to generate more respect than fast cars.
Morgan Housel, The Psychology of Money
This is very true. Every time we look at people owning expensive stuff, we admire how wealthy they are, not because of their wealth but because we feel that we should possess that stuff as well and in the back of our mind we think that if we become so rich, people will admire us. And that admiration is short-lived. Also, because we do not analyze our true feelings and ignore this paradox, when we finally have a decent amount of money, we end up wasting it by buying expensive stuff we don’t really need but feel that we must have it to attract admiration from others. To get something that will become a representation of our wealth and well-being.
Instead, we should save that money to actually grow our wealth even more and to enjoy actual financial well-being. And we should be attracting true respect by putting our best behavior out in the open and treating people with humility and empathy. By spreading positivity wherever we go. Such respect and admiration is wholesome and motivates many other to further spread your positive energy.
In the end, I will highly recommend anyone reading this article, to go and read this book to get some great advice about generating wealth and staying rich once you have acquired it.
Thank you!
